Week One – Week 1: Art & Drawing 101 (June 1st – 4th)

We kick off the program by diving headfirst into the exciting world of art! Using our studio’s huge library of books, students get to explore why art matters while discovering different genres, styles, and mediums. We’ll also take a fun, beginner-friendly tour through art history. Each student will pick an artwork that inspires them and use it as their creative spark for the week.

We’ll head out on short exploratory walks to nearby cultural spots and outdoor spaces—just a couple of blocks from the studio. Students will sketch what they see, collect ideas, and bring all that inspiration back to the studio.

From there, those sketches grow into larger, finished pieces using graphite drawing techniques and core foundational skills. We’ll also experiment with charcoal and other cool drawing materials. It’s the perfect start to building confidence, curiosity, and artistic superpowers!

Week 2: Color Wheel Creations – Acrylic Painting (June 8th – 12th)

This week, students dive into the world of color and acrylic painting. We’ll explore the color wheel like true color scientists—mixing primary colors to create tons of awesome new hues. Everyone will design their own custom color wheel to use all week long.

Then we jump into hands-on painting fun! Students get to experiment with acrylic techniques, different brushes, palette knives, textures, and cool art mediums. We’ll look at famous artists throughout history and then recreate their masterpieces in our own unique style. It’s all about building confidence, trying new things, and letting creativity run wild!

Week 3: Nature is Art – Painting Shadows (June 15th – 18th)

Week three invites artists to play, explore, and have fun with shadows! This session focuses on abstract art, using positive and negative space to turn simple shapes into exciting and imaginative creations. With watercolor and pen as our tools, students will experiment with bold contrasts, flowing color, and creative designs.

We’ll spend time both inside and outside around The Station, discovering how shadows stretch, move, and change throughout the day. Instead of drawing exactly what we see, artists will be encouraged to simplify shapes, make them bigger or sillier, and turn them into their own unique artwork.

Watercolor will add soft, colorful washes and a sense of movement, while pen work will help outline shapes and add fun details. Together, these materials make it easy to create artwork that feels both playful and expressive.

Week 4: Culinary Fun – Food is Art (June 22nd – 25th)

Get ready for a deliciously creative week! Culinary Fun is all about exploring how food can be transformed into amazing works of art. Young artists will discover how shapes, colors, and textures found in evryday foods can be used to create beautiful—and sometimes edible—designs.

We’ll take a special trip downstairs to Crescendo, where we’ll meet Chef Toby for a fun and engaging demonstration. He’ll share how being a chef is a creative adventure and show how food can be used as an artistic medium in exciting ways.

Back in the studio, students will dive into hands-on projects using a variety of food materials like beans, rice, tea, and more to create unique mixed media artwork. This week is all about experimenting, building, and having fun with unexpected materials.

It’s a fully immersive, fun-filled four days where creativity is everywhere—and yes, there may even be a few tasty treats along the way!

Week 5: Creative Writing – Collage & Journaling (July 6th – 9th)

This week is all about creativity, self-expression, and having fun with words and images! In Creative Writing – Collage & Journaling, young artists will get to explore storytelling in a totally unique and hands-on way using scissors, tape, glue, magazines, and even their own writing.

Students will experiment with typography, word design, and creative writing, combining everything into one-of-a-kind journal pages. They’ll have the chance to play with an old typewriter, explore different letter shapes, and discover how fonts and styles can express different moods and feelings.

Journaling during this week is all about creating a personal book filled with images, words, and ideas—something meaningful they can keep and continue to build on over time. We’ll also explore different forms of writing, including poetry, short stories, and even elements of graffiti-style art.

Through fun and engaging projects, students will build confidence in sharing their thoughts and ideas, all within a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment where creativity can truly shine.

Week 6: Cardboard Creations (July 13th – 16th)

Get ready for one of the most exciting weeks of the summer! Cardboard Creations is a hands-on adventure in building, designing, and letting your imagination run wild. This week is all about turning simple materials into something truly amazing.

Students will explore how an ordinary cardboard box can transform into incredible sculptures, costume pieces, and more. Our main project will be creating a fun, animatronic-style dragon head that can be operated by hand—perfect for storytelling, imaginative play, and bringing creative ideas to life!

Along the way, artists will learn how cardboard can be used as a strong and flexible base for many types of art. We’ll experiment with painting, collage, and mixed media, discovering how this everyday material can become something extraordinary—even with limited resources.

To complete the experience, students will design and build their own creative backdrops for their dragon creations. At the end of the week, they’ll use their dragons and backgrounds to stage fun photo moments and storytelling scenes, capturing their work and celebrating their creativity.

Week 7: Theater & Improv – Costume Design (July 20th – 23rd)

Get ready to step into the spotlight! Theater & Improv – Costume Design is a fun-filled week where students will explore acting, storytelling, and character creation through playful skits and imaginative performance.

Young actors will get to try out different characters, write short scripts, and even help design simple costumes as they work together to create a small performance to share at the end of the week. This is a week full of laughter, creativity, and teamwork!

We’ll also play exciting improv games inspired by shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway?, helping students build quick thinking skills, confidence, and the ability to think on their feet in a supportive and encouraging environment.

A special highlight of the week will be a visit to The Clayton Center, where students will go behind the scenes at the theater and meet with the theater director. They’ll learn how live performance impacts the community and discover how powerful storytelling on stage can be.

Students will also have the option to step into the spotlight and perform a short two-minute monologue, shared only with their fellow program artists as the audience. This creates a safe, supportive space for students to build confidence and express themselves in front of peers who are also exploring their own creativity.

This week is all about finding your voice, having fun, and discovering the magic of live theater.
